Adamantium

Adamantium

This material is considered mythical in rarity, where there will likely ever exist a handful and to come across it would require PK events, extraordinary tools, and capabilities.

In the beginning when Life first took form, the core of the land strained under the weight of its small young host. The stone cracked and was crushed together, and shards split from it and gushed out which went through a long change until they stood apart from what remained of the first-made land, and were called Adamantium.

Since the age of creation every race has coveted it, for it is the most efficient material that exists and the simplest. It is said to be beyond all measure in its toughness and to carry the strength to carve through the best metals that Men can forge, so that in the hands of a cunning warrior it threatened everything that lived but winning it from the earth could cost an entire crew to potentially never even finding it.

Only the Dwarves have ever gathered it and from their small harvest they have made trinkets, weapons and armor. A buyer needs a great sum of coin to trade for it, since a dwarf is the greediest of all creatures, and even then the price sometimes is more than any coin one could carry. Those who have it make friends and foes cower alike, and so monarchs and leaders wield it to show their might in battle and in beauty. Courage settles on whoever bears it, though many wizards in the realm have asked what a man would be if the armament were stripped from him, and whether his courage would stay.

In the days of yore, near the first gathering of the dwarven kin, there was a king of the Bronzebeards who thought himself unconquerable in his abundance of Adamantium.
In his reign the Hall of Anvils was roofed with the metal and his throne was cast of it. His counselors grew uneasy and the oldest of them, a stooped and prideful delver named Orsk Ashbeard, warned him that a hall of such wealth would draw covetous eyes. Thurgrim only laughed, and the walls rumbled. “Let them come,” he said, “and break themselves upon it.”

They came in the ninth winter of his rule. A lone hooded man arrived at the gates at dusk and requested a night’s shelter. He sat at the king’s table and looked long at the throne, then at the armor, then at the glimmering roof, and before the sun rose he was gone, and the king’s great crown of Adamantium with him.

Thurgrim raged through his emptied halls and sent riders north and south to search. In the third month a rumor came to the hold that the crown had been seen on the brow of a distant bandit chief, who now boasted that he no longer could be harmed.

The king went himself. His sons had begged him to leave the armor behind, since the road was long and the carriage heavy, so in his haste he gave way. So Thurgrim rode plainly clad, with a hammer of common iron at his belt, and when he reached the bandit camp the chief laughed at the sight of him, and the whole outlaw host rose against him.

Here the tale divides where some say the old king trembled, as the wizards had foretold, and was struck down in the snow. Others say he stood alone against them with no Adamantium upon him, and that the bandits, who had feared the metal, found the plain face beneath it more fearful still. The dwarven flock naturally hold to the latter tale. The ancient wizards, wiser or crueler, say the truth lies between them but all agree that Thurgrim came home with a cracked skull and a better temper. Thereafter, he took the Adamantium from his roof and melted it into plows and nails, saying that a king should ask himself whether the armor wears him or not.

The few who have seen Adamantium unworked say it is neither bright as silver nor gleaming as gold, but carries a deep hue that shifts as the light moves across it due to its crystalized form. Beneath the surface lie pale threads of grey-gold, which the old ones hold to be the marks of the world’s first wounding. It takes a polish no other metal can match, though the work is long and harsh. Its finest quality is the sheen as torchlight catches upon its surface, and a blade of it in a darkened hall seems to hold a small steady dusk of its own.

When struck it gives a single low note that lingers long after the blow. Smiths of old tested every piece by that note alone, as a flawed piece rang false with a crack or a waver in it, and a warrior in battle could pick out such a blade across a battlefield. This off-note ring would herald its durability faltering, soon finding itself to shatter.

No common metal’s blow leaves a mark on it: Arrows shatter against it, cudgels and axes are turned aside, and the teeth of ordinary swords are merely notched. Armor wrought of it takes a spear-thrust with ease and is lighter than steel of the same strength.

Yet the old tales, and even the travelling songs, do not call it invincible, and a wise warrior knows the difference between hard and unbreakable. Adamantium has bent under immense pressure, and a few ancient accounts record weapons shattered by the blow of a mountain-giant’s maul, the fall of a collapsing hall or a God’s touch.

For all its worth it is no easy thing to work. The forge-fires of common smiths cannot soften it, and only the hottest forges, fed with a fuel the experienced prize, can bring it to the heat where it will yield. Even then, if capable, the shaping must be done in a single working.

- All items made with Adamantium require Gamemaster signature.
- All Adamantium items are represented by Diamond items mechanically.
- Forging process of Adamantium may require a Gamemaster to oversee.
- Collection of Adamantium can only be done through an event, where the material has been pre-approved for distribution.
